4 years since his last all star game Gary Sanchez is set to make a comeback at his career with the other New York team. Gary Sanchez has been called up by the Mets this past Thursday to fill part time catching duties with Francisco Alvarez. Not know for his defense, his offense definitely Carrie’s Sanchez’s game. Sanchez was a key piece for the Yankees when he became an active contributor in 2016 until 2019.
It’s make or break for Gary Sanchez to prove his worth once again in New York. The Mets signed Sanchez to a minor league 10 day deal with an opt out clause if the Mets didn’t call up Sanchez in that time frame. The Giants originally were the first to sign Sanchez to a minor league deal but after just batting .185 in 20 games the catcher called it quits and went back on the market. The Mets swept in and gave him a classic prove yourself deal. Well with what was produced in Triple-AAA Syracuse it looks like the Kraken is back. He had 1 HR, 5 RBIS in 8 games played and slashed a .308/.514/.500/1.0414. It’s small sample size but have the Mets found their second hand man?
With Omar Narvaez down with a calf strain and Tomas Nido out with vision problems, it’s up to Alvarez to breakout out and prove to be a consistent contributor. To help ease the pressure on the youngster the Mets had a flurry of moves to fill the absence of a 2nd catcher, with most recently veteran Michael Perez having a small stink with the Mets till being called down in the Sanchez move.
Sanchez had his time in the New York spotlight, it’s hard to reminisce on the glory of Sanchez’s pasttime with the Yankees. He averaged 32 homeruns a year and 73 RBIs a year during his hot stretch with the Yankees. But as soon as Sanchez’s power slowed down there was no real reason to give Sanchez a run on the roster anymore. Barring his horrible defense the Yankees traded him the next year to the Twins.
Wasn’t the prettiest of a season for Sanchez but he proved to be a fighting warrior till the end. Now it’s his time to prove his worth with the Mets. As the Mets enter a new wave of their franchise with all the youngsters emerging we need some veteran leadership to guide these players. Gary Sanchez could be that guy, especially with a vast playoff resume it will definitely do arrive for the Mets as they try and make it back to the playoffs for a consecutive year.
Is the Kraken back? It’s time to roll! Let’s get it going! The subway series just got more epic.
