“OMG” This team is something special man! A season that begun going 0-5 to start the season and now we’re in the middle of a tight playoff race tied with the Braves for the third wildcard spot. This season is something else and showed we did not give up even when we were at our lowest point. This team stuck together during their low points and weren’t discouraged from their results the night before as everyday became a new mission to get another win. May 29th, was argubly the worst point in the Mets season where they were 11 games under .500. The Mets decided to have a team meeting to discuss private matters, as JD Martinez illustrated to the media perfectly, that no one is expecting the Mets to be good this year so there is no pressure in playing for a team that has accepted this to be a transition and sell off year. He reiterated the league isn’t afraid of the Mets and that they shouldn’t feel like there is pressure. People on the team knew if they kept this losing streak up that they will end up selling off on key important players one of which could have been first baseman Pete Alonso.
The Mets who many predicted to be a bad non contending team by having a monster June where they went 16-8 and propelled themselves into the playoff window. These Mets are something else and almost had the most wins in the month of June in franchise history. Ironically enough the start of their winning stretch began after McDonalds mascot Grimace threw out the first pitch in honor of Grimace’s birthday. It was crazy and it was weird but whatever it takes to get wins on the board is what matters.
Flash forward today and the Mets are tied with the Braves for the third wildcard spot and Life could not be any better. From the expectations this club had to outperforming everything and everyone ending up staying is insanity to me. This season we had a lot of people step up and show themselves big time and prove that Queens can have a winning culture even after a massive fire sale during the year prior. Players like Mark Vientos are stepping up big time offensively who even after missing the first 6 weeks off the season is almost approaching 25 homeruns and ranks among the best NL 3rd baseman in terms of offensive statistics. With just 97 hits Vientos has 24 homers, 62 RBI, and a stat line of .278/.336/.542/.877, these numbers would rank in the top 10 of their respective stats if Vientos had enough plate appearances to qualify.
The Mets are also having an MVP season out of Francisco Lindor who leads all NL players with the most WAR. He is both impeccable with the glove and the bat and has seriously come up clutch for the Mets and thought he won’t end up winning the award he certainly has been the most valuable player in the National League when you compare it to Shohei Ohtani who will only be winning the MVP as a DH because of his insane offensive powers. Lindor who leads with 6.5 WAR has played in all games the season while leading in late appearances and at bats he has 160 hits, 102 runs, 31 homers, 85 RBIs, 27 SB, 53 walks, with a stat line of .269/.339/.488 of an OPS of .828 and his clear best marks for OPS+ as a Met with a 134 OPS+. He is outstanding and has been the catalyst of this offense. Even after starting the season with a sub 1.00 Batting average while also being worth -1.0 WAR turned his season around and now catapulted himself in the MVP race because of it. It truly is a miracle a Mets miracle.
This is especially vital when guys like Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo are struggling at the plate. Though Pete Alonso is most likely going to have his 5th 35+ homerun season it is still a down year for him in terms of offense. Coming at a really bad time then year before he becomes a free agent. Alonso has prioritized singles more than usual to raise his batting average from usual. However Pete Alonso shouldn’t be worried about raising batting average and hitting for more singles, he is a power hitter and should only worry about power while also avoiding ending the rallies. Last year he hit .217 but produced 46 homeruns and over 100 RBIs yet this year he hasn’t had the same power hungry mindset.
As for the pitching side holy cow it has completely dominated! As for Luis Severino became a very unnoticed signing at the free agent class who was ridiculed entirely for the signing as many believed he was washed after his nightmare season season in the Bronx. After fixing up a few mechanical issues Luis Severino has succeeded at his best pitching season since 2018 where he has a 10-6 record, 3.74 Era, he has started every game 28 games and pitched over 166 innings for the first time since 2018. He is masterful and has been such an amazing reclamation project for the Mets and Stearns. A cheap signing of just $13 million has paid off dividends!
Sean Manaea is another guy who has stepped up big time in the rotation. He is seen now as the Mets best pitcher as he ranks top ten in a few pitching statistics like WHiP, ERA and innings. Manaea has complied a 11-5 record, 3.43 ERA, already at 2.6 WAR too, also missed zero games started all 28 and almost has 160 innings with 163 strikeouts. Another Lefty who has completely turned things around this season is Mets David Peterson. Peterson is sitting at a 9-2 record where the Mets have won 15 of his last games. Peterson who missed a lot of the season due to recovering from Tommy John has the best ERA for Mets starters with a 2.98 era, 102 innings, 83 strikeouts 1.35 WHiP and missed zero games since his season debut. Who would have thought Peterson, Severino and Manea would have accounted for 38% of the Mets 80 wins this season.
It has been an insane turn of events this season, a team who was thrown out of the dust early has proven to the world that they are here to stay and are going to make an attack at the postseason. There is no one I want leading my Mets to the playoffs more than Francisco Lindor. The superstar of the team who has come up every time during his “lin”-sanity has come up big time and I know he will do whatever it takes to lead us to the promise land. I hope this team wins it all this year I really do but anything is possible in baseball and just because we’re on a run of destiny similar to the Washington Nationals in 2019 nothing is promised. Our destiny is in our hands, we must heal the past mistakes we’ve made like 2006 NLCS Beltran not swinging at the last pitch, or the fall of 2007,2008,2009 or the crushing World Series loss the Mets experienced in 2015. Now is the time to rewrite those wrongs.
