The Phenom Luis Gil

The Yankees have once again surprised baseball with a stellar season from one of their players. For a team that struggled in years past with pitching help, unable to provide the depth for Gerrit Cole for the back of the rotation have relied on several options for their starting pitching. From internal to trades to waiver wires and free agency, the Yankees somewhat struggled to have lockdown pitchers for their rotation. Even after signing Carlos Rodon to a 5 year deal he ended up struggling horribly his first season giving up an average of 5 runs per game. However it is the Yankees and they always find a way out of a struggle. If it was not for the stellar year of Luis Gil the Yankees would not remain in first place and would lose it to the Baltimore Orioles playing outta their minds right now.

Let’s jump right into the facts because this kid is something special and he can definitely pitch. In 81 games pitched, Gil has already amassed 97 strikeouts has a record of 9-2 and an era of 2.77. His 30.7% K rate ranks near the top of the list He is 47% better than league average posting career high numbers it only makes you wonder how many years he can keep this talent up. If it wasn’t for a shaky start against the Orioles where he gave up 8 runs in 1.1 innings his era would be below 2.00 which it was up to this point. Regardless Gil is so good and fun to watch, already has 2.3 WAR as a pitcher which ranks top 10 for AL pitchers. He was originally signed by the Twins but after the Twins traded for left fielder Jake Cave from the Yankees Gil was quickly sent away to the Bronx. To the Bronx he faired and soared easily in the ranking as not only one of the best rookies but pitchers in general and could easily win both awards (ROY, CY Young) if he keeps this remarkable stretch of good baseball up. If it’s not Gil then it’s Corbin Burnes who is in the running for his 2nd CY Young and would join an elite list of 7 players to win the award in both leagues.

After only appearing in a game in 2023 Gil was not looked to start the season with the team in 2024 but after injury concern from Gerrit Cole flared the organization thought Gil would be the best man up to take Cole’s spot in the rotation. With everything already stated he has given the yankees more that they could ask for and with the stretch of Gil’s dominance it felt like Cole never left. As of now Gil leads all AL rookies in war with prominent stars like Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford among other rookies playing well under their valued hype. Gil will easily take home the AL ROY and the AL CY Young is not out of far reach for the young one too. The King of the ‘Gil’ would join an elite list of him and Fernando Valenzuela as the only two players to win both awards in the same season. Let’s see what this kid has in store for the rest of the season, it’s his to lose and the Yankees hate loosing.

About

Prime Time Baseball is an independent sports platform created by James Leather, a 22-year-old senior at Binghamton University with a lifelong passion for baseball. What started as a personal outlet has grown into a space focused on storytelling, accessibility, and modern baseball analysis.

This platform isn’t just about box scores or surface-level stats. It’s about context. Prime Time Baseball breaks down pitching mechanics, advanced metrics, roster construction, and front-office decisions in a way that both casual fans and hardcore followers can understand quickly. The goal is to make dense baseball topics feel approachable, not overwhelming.

As an avid Mets fan, that perspective naturally shows up here, but the focus goes beyond one team. Prime Time Baseball aims to create storylines across the league — highlighting player development, trends, and moments that shape the game beyond numbers alone.

There is also a strong interest in marketing and SEO behind the scenes. This page is built to grow, evolve, and eventually expand into coverage of other sports. It’s a work in progress, and that’s intentional. The platform grows as the writing grows.

Prime Time Baseball is for fans who want to learn, engage, and enjoy the game on a deeper level — without needing a statistics degree to do it.
