“Blood, toil, tears, and sweat” – Winston Churchill
“In the battle for baseball supremacy, let us embrace the spirit of ‘Runs, Slides, Cheers, and Sweat’. This rivalry is our call to arms as we face off against our foes across the pond. Let us emphasize the need for grit, determination, and sacrifice to emerge victorious on the diamond. Let every pitch, every swing, and every catch be a testament to our unwavering resolve to conquer our rivals and claim victory for our beloved teams. Together, let us rise to the challenge and show the world the strength and passion of the Mets-Phillies rivalry!”
Baseball continues to grow as a global sports entity, garnering more attention each day, especially with standout players like Shohei Ohtani dominating as a two-way player and young phenoms showcasing their high velocity and impeccable command. However, the sport took a hit in popularity since the late 1990s when rampant PED use tarnished its image. The era of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds competing in a home run race captured the imagination of fans of all ages, but the subsequent ban on performance-enhancing drugs in the early 2000s dealt a blow to baseball’s appeal, particularly among casual viewers.
Baseball’s relentless pursuit of regaining its former glory has led to innovative strategies, including hosting annual games in different countries. Recognizing the potential to expand its global reach, MLB took a bold step in 2024 by scheduling three games in distinct international locations. The season kicked off with the Dodgers and Padres facing off in Seoul, Korea, on March 20th. Following this, the Astros and Rockies squared off in Mexico City on April 28th and 29th. However, arguably the most anticipated match of the trio is the Mets vs. Phillies showdown set to unfold across the pond in London on June 8th and 9th at the London Stadium. Transforming the Western United Soccer stadium into a baseball haven, these two days promise a spectacle filled with fervor as the stadium will be full of angry ultra competitive Philadelphians and New Yorkers converge for an exhilarating two-game series.
“Amidst the Brexit buzz, the Mets and Phillies collide in London for a baseball showdown that’ll make even the politicians take notice!” This marks the first time in over 24 years that the Mets have ventured beyond American soil. The last international outing was in 2000 when they faced the Cubs in Japan. Since then, it’s been all about baseball in Queens. But now, the Queens natives get to play in the land of the Queen. Hail the Queen! “The Mets are on a mission to paint London orange and blue!” It promises to be an exceptionally fun time watching my team take on the fighting Phillies across the pond. Despite the Mets’ current struggles, sitting at a 26-35 record, and the Phillies appearing as serious World Series contenders with a 43-19 record, I’m eagerly anticipating this series. From the land of the 7 line to the sea of the British, the Mets “are bringing their A-game from Queens to Buckingham Palace!” Regardless of the outcome, whether it’s a win for the Mets (fingers crossed) or not, it’ll be another victory for America across the pond. With two incredibly passionate baseball rivals and a wealth of history between them, it’s time for another epic series filled with ensuing dramatic plays and thrilling baseball. “From the Big Apple to Big Ben, the Mets are set to conquer London!”
