For years Mets fans had to hide away, succumbent to the realm of the pinstripes. Hiding away in pity and embarrassment of our winningness franchise, scared to represent and scared to indulge. But now times have changed, there is no more alpha that represents the city, there is no more discouragement for bleeding orange and blue. It is time to run this city victoriously and show New York who is boss, and that man is none other than Steven Cohen to lead us to the promise land.
The 1990s was well over 30 years ago yet Yankees fans still think they run this city, I can admit it the Yankees are a much more successful franchise than the Mets will ever be, though is it time to admit the gas is finally running out? The Yankees finished in 4th place and lost out of the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, they have not finished this low since 1990. As bad as the Mets are, New York has put the Yankees on a pedestal since the dawn of time, so winning is an expectation. But since not making it back to the World Series in 2009 they have been slowly falling apart and it all starts with the front office. The front office is suppose to represent a standard of professionalism, even if things don’t go particularly in the direction you favored it is always a major expectation that the front office doesn’t reflect their emotions in press conferences.
Clearly the season the Yankees had this past season was far from ideal, it crushed everyone’s standards of what the Yankees can promise especially after Aaron Judge’s homerun breaking season 2023 was a year to forget entirely. However take it from a Mets fan who has witnessed far worse collapses in the early 2010s, it is insufferable and frustrating but it is most important that the troubles the team faced is not represented in live air press conferences like the tantrum Brian Cashman had a few days ago. Though the Mets are always going to be ‘LOLMets’ they still know how to show a bit of class when breaking down their mid season troubles to the press.
Recently, Brian Cashman was interviewed by the press at the annual General Manager meeting in Florida, and Cashman was far from civil with how he addressed the media. He was very angry with the vulgar language used, the remarks made shocked the baseball world and put a spin on the once NY organization primed on their ability to be full of classs. He made it clear from the start of the press conference the Yankees are driven differently from other teams and that they are not an analytically focused team, “the Yankees have the smallest analytics department in the AL East.” “No one’s doing their deep dives. They’re just throwing their ammunition and their bullsh–, and accusing of us being run analytically.” I don’t believe it is an “accusation” to assume a big market team in New York is run analytically in the 21st century. If you remove Aaron Judge from the equation, the Yankees have been far below the Mendoza line the past two seasons. So the the attitude Cashman had was not accurately presented with the level of play the Yankees have been showing.
The past few years The Yankees made idiotic trades that may have looked wise on paper but turned out nothing but horrible. They traded their more than capable 3rd baseman (Gio Urshela) and their power slugging catcher (Gary Sanchez) for an aging Josh Donaldson and a weak utility player Isaiah Kiner Falefa. As well as trading a boat load of prospects for a shelled Joey Gallo or more recently wiping their farm for Frankie Montas who ended up having surgery in the 2023 campaign.
No one understands any of the moves this ‘scouting first’ organization has made and Cashman seriously has the audacity to make it seem as if analytics is a problem when the Yankees have failed at growing stronger every year. Who cares if you have the largest scouting, that doesn’t mean shit if you do not have the analytics to help these players develop into the stars they should be. You are a pathetic disgrace of a general manager and symbolize the whininess the Yankees front office has been since the Steinbrenner family took over.
But this isn’t about Cashman this is about a call for help for all teams. Teams need to strategize better to put a more efficient team on the field, there is no more of a need to buy out the free agent/ trade market, its about being smart and picking the players that are under control for a long time that can be developed easily at a low cost. I see too much unneeded competition among baseball, they are rush to sign the best players but more than half the time it doesn’t workout. The Rangers signing Jacob deGrom to a 5 year deal was hardly a success with deGrom being shelled with his second Tommy John surgery of his career or the Mets gambling on two old veterans in Scherzer and Verlander and having to trade them because of injuries and false hopes. Signing players to attractive deals is only cool for the storyline of the offseason but once the season begins and the teams with high hopes to contend start to fail who is the one to blame? It is 2023 and teams like the Rays, Brewers and the Braves are yearly playoff contenders while keeping a roster under $200 million. These are the teams that win the offseason, not the teams that sign the flashy players for luxurious contracts. If you can keep your payroll under a respectable amount and field a competing team every year then you are the blueprint for success.
Tying it back to the Mets, we’ve called short of this goal every year, we have struggled to field a team that is competitive each year and doesn’t have any holes that hinder from contention. Stupid management and frugal owners stopped us from representing the 7line army as a strong balanced team with a fighting urge to bring the World Series back to Queens. Struggles and rounds of managers and coaches, terrible decisions and improbable loses have kept the Mets in the gutter too long. David Stearns is suppose to be the band aid to fix all the mess the Mets have had during the Cohen era.
Look at what he has done with the Brewers, he has built a successful team each year and doesn’t need the big name guys to lead the pack. Now with an owner like Steve Cohen he doesn’t need to be afraid of making big moves, we have built the farm system the past few years and will lower our astronomic payroll sooner than later for the young players to take control and leave the veterans out of the equation. I am excited for what is to come for this team and based on the disaster class presented by Bitch Cashman its time to represent what a good GM/ President brings to the table. Not whine over the inexcusable but be optimistic of the future and have a prevalent amount of resources to lead to the promise land.
From a newly talent group of young individuals as well as a packed analytics department, a fresh scouting department for both internal and international amateur signings, with all these resources in front of us it is only a matter of time until Cohen proves righteous to his proclamation he made 3 years ago today at Citi Field of a World Series coming back to Queens! A change of reign is happening, Mets are moving towards the future while Yankee fans have become succumbent to their egos of the past.
