Waiving the White Flag

Everything must have a leader in charge. Everything must have order and structure or else chaos can inflict. To own and be an executive of a team means you are willing to always do what is necessary and vital for your organization even if it makes making some sacrifices. Owning a team means you do what is right for your team to contend as you try and build a winning culture year in and year out, as you not only look towards the present but have an eye at building for the future as well without letting your emotions get in the way.

Some general managers are like this and just completely ‘shit the bed’ when their importance to their organization matters most. Some make the most unquestionable baring idiotic decisions that make the fans go ballistic because their lifelong team is at the hands of a complete moron controlling their future and present team. It’s as if you are stuck in a burning building, and the fire alarm goes off several times but you completely ignore it and you wait till the end till the fire has obstructed your path and you are stuck surrounding by nothing but a massive fire and nothing but the fear of what will come next haunts your every thought, and until you think everything is over you see an ‘Angel’ who tells you “Perry Minasian, executive and General Manager of the Anaheim Angels wake up it’s over”. But crap, it’s too late the fire has already trapped Perry Minasian, executive and general manager of the Anaheim Angels alone in the fire where his whole lively and small amount of respect in the baseball organization goes up in flames.

And yet, NONE of that compares to the actual dumpster fire of a trade deadline Perry Minasian, executive and general manager of the Anaheim Angels has done. 8/29/23 the day the Angels waived the white flag to the other 29 MLB teams for if any of them would like to take the stars THEY traded for A MONTH ago to be on their roster and help them compete for a playoff spot for free! And that’s exactly what the Angels did!

The Angels are about to miss the playoffs for the 9th consecutive season this year and there is nothing that blows more than not getting the chance to see Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout to compete in the postseason together. And yet in a season where it’s ‘do or die’ for a high performance season for Ohtani’s last year, the Angels failed to live up to expectations. They lost out on the greatest player of all time to play in the postseason because of a failed front office.

The front office has been extremely lackluster and ignorant when it comes to starting pitching and creating some sort of ‘ace’ to lead with Mike Trout. The Angels having years of incompetence and not spending at the trade deadline has hurt them for so many years from players hitting the IL to players going cold, so this year the Angels were determined to spend. They spent alright, they made a promise to Angel fans after taking Ohtani off the trade market that they were going to just live out the rest of the season and supplement the team with new trade recruitments to boost the team and help provide some win support.

The Angels first big move came from the declining White Sox who parted ways with longtime ace ‘Lucas Giolito’ as well as RHP Reynoldo Lopez for the Angels #2 and #3 best prospects. ‘RHP Ty Bush and C Edgar Quero’ are shipped back to Chicago for the pair of pitchers. A week later the Angels made a move with the Rockies that was really just a salary dump from the Rockies onto the Angels. The Angels received 1B CJ Cron and RF Randal Grichuk for a few minor league players and cash. The team looked revitalized and set to contend with the new flashy lineup consisting of 7 new trade deadline additions to the team. Nothing could go wrong, it felt like Ohtani was finally going to get a taste of Anaheim playoffs, until injury injury injury injury and injury dropped the Angels 15+ games down in the standings and drained all playoff hopes for the year. The Angels had one of the least productive months in August, going an abysmal 7-19 and completely dropping down the standings, where they would have to fight the 3 other AL West super teams.

Perry and the Angels knew they messed up with the deadline, but it became especially worse once news broke that Ohtani tore his UCL and would require Tommy John Surgery taking him out the next year as a pitcher. He can still hit however he needs to heal up before he begins throwing. Its incredibly devestating to Ohtani, as a 2 way superstar he was bound to get massive attention with this year free agent class. It is obvious to believe that Ohtani will receive a recordbreaking contract this year and will stilll be the best player on the planet even if he has to spend a year resting his arm. His value has dropped a little seeing he has a history of being injury prone and won’t be a two way player next but regardless he’s still going to get a fat paycheck this offseason, it just won’t be with Anaheim!

He should have been traded! You wasted the potential to massively upgrade your farm system. The Angels farm system was already pretty bad and making the move to trade for star players only damaged their future even more. Even if Ohtani resigns there is no one to say they will have a better team record than what they current have, it was always the smart thing to trade Ohtani and get a massive return for him. But Perry and Arte Moreno wanted to keep Ohtani for ticket sales and not trade him, so when the news broke out that the Angels have put all their new pitchers and hitters (Matt Moore, Randal Grichuk, Reynoldo Lopez, Dominic Leone, Lucas Giolito and Hunter Renfroe) all on the waiver wire you just knew that this was the stupidest most ignorant trade deadline the sport has ever seen.

I know no one wants to be the team that traded away Ohtani, but it is better to get some return than have him leave fir nothing. And it is even worse when you trade for a team to win and then you waiver wire all the new aquistions because you failed to reach expectations for the season. And it’s all Perry Minasian fault. But you are a moron who blew the farm and basically handed out free prospects for nothing in return all for a meaningful salary dump as if you’re going to sign Ohtani. But it’s too late. Look for a new job because you’re no longer an Angel you’re a curse!

About

Prime Time Baseball is an independent sports platform created by James Leather, a 22-year-old senior at Binghamton University with a lifelong passion for baseball. What started as a personal outlet has grown into a space focused on storytelling, accessibility, and modern baseball analysis.

This platform isn’t just about box scores or surface-level stats. It’s about context. Prime Time Baseball breaks down pitching mechanics, advanced metrics, roster construction, and front-office decisions in a way that both casual fans and hardcore followers can understand quickly. The goal is to make dense baseball topics feel approachable, not overwhelming.

As an avid Mets fan, that perspective naturally shows up here, but the focus goes beyond one team. Prime Time Baseball aims to create storylines across the league — highlighting player development, trends, and moments that shape the game beyond numbers alone.

There is also a strong interest in marketing and SEO behind the scenes. This page is built to grow, evolve, and eventually expand into coverage of other sports. It’s a work in progress, and that’s intentional. The platform grows as the writing grows.

Prime Time Baseball is for fans who want to learn, engage, and enjoy the game on a deeper level — without needing a statistics degree to do it.
