The Chicago white Sox are notably a really bad franchise. Years of misfortune and falling below expectations has painted the white Sox as a weak franchise who constantly make bad moves.
The 2023 team is no different, they are are really not good in any category. Actually they are outdoing the expectations people had for this team since many believed them to be in the race for contention in the AL Central but they’ve only ended up struggling along the way. Not even at 10 wins yet and the Sox are looking at another disastrous season.
Though with every thunderstorm comes a rainbow, there will always be some positives in a season full of doubt. Teams that struggle the most still have glamours of success and bright spots in the team. The white Sox are one of the crappier teams in baseball that has a fan base that values the smaller moments in their club because they don’t really have the opportunities to value larger moments. All of them are special and the pitching of the White Sox has notably has seen some success over the years.
Success is one thing but historical trends is another. A team that constantly breaks the records for historic achievements is a team willing to put a battle on everyday. The success of the Sox is seen with the magical pitching moments this franchise has seen over the years.
From 2020 to present day, the White Sox always find their way dancing with the history books. The franchise has seen 2 no hitters since the start of the 2020 season and almost one last year. And now this afternoon with the success of Lance Lynn against the Rays, the White Sox could be looking at the 4th pitcher to achieve this goal in a 4 year span.
Now given the other Sox pitchers – Dylan Cease (2022) and currently Lance Lynn if he doesn’t make it through the game are one of 4 to pitch in a no hitting game. Even if they didn’t end up victorious at the final score, they still pitched masterfully to be in the running for it.
2020 it was RHP Lucas Giolito’s no hitter that he complied against the Pirates. He threw 13 strikeouts in a complete game on August 26 2020. It was the first no hitter since 2012 when Philip Humber threw a perfect game against the Mariners.
2021 was another undoubtedly unexpected year of success from LHP Carlos Rodon. Shockingly Rodon was DFAd by the White Sox prior to the 2021 season. But the White Sox signed him to a one year deal which he gladly accepted. It turned out to be a spectacular deal that almost turned out to be a nightmare for the Sox if they didn’t offer Rodon a deal. He went 13-5 that year with an ERA under 3.00. Rodon threw a no hitter against the Cleveland Indians. In a 8-0 win over the Indians the White Sox secure the dub with a consecutive CY young award two years in a row. In the season of a spike in no hitters and juiced balls Rodon rode that season with a career high in stats that helped him get a 2 year deal with the Giants for $50,000,000/2.
2022 was another year of successful pitching for the white Sox. Give or take the rest of the struggling staff, Dylan Cease made up for it with being in the CY Young conversation for all of the season. He had a 14-8 and a 2.20 ERA, an absolute breakout season for the young Sox pitcher who never had a season with an ERA below 3.90 prior to the 2022 season.
Though he was super successful, he never won a no hitter. He came darn close which would have beaten an MLB record for most consecutive no hitters thrown by the year. Cease really came close, throwing 8.2 scoreless innings against the Twins in a 13-0 victory. Hard throwing strikeouts and dominance throughout the game it seemed inevitable he would take home the no hitter victory. That was until future AL Batting Champ knocked in a single that would break the no hitter. In a 0-2 count 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and just like that the no hitter was wiped. It sucks but he came super close and still no team reached all these statlines.
As we speak now Lance Lynn is in the middle of a no hitter. The first of his career and over the 10th for the White Sox. He is against the Rays and has gone 7 scoreless innings to keep the game 2-0. He is primed to get the no hitter. The baseball gods always write crazy scripts during the season that no one would have guessed. The team first to win 20 games and less than 5 loses, the team that went 13-0 is about to be no hit by a bottom feeder in the weak AL central division. Wow it is pretty mindblowing. Baseball plays in mysterious ways. I hope I don’t jinx this but it looks like he will have a no hitter tonight. Even if he doesn’t he has already come close and no other team in baseball has reached this amazing milestone for pitching.
